Phoenix Graduates Awarded 4 of 6 NEBOSH Awards for Best Candidates

2nd October 2024

Health and safety students have celebrated success at the 2024 NEBOSH graduation, as NEBOSH diplomas and masters qualifications have been awarded.

The ceremony, which took place on Monday 16th September, was particularly special for Phoenix Health & Safety, who celebrated the graduation of 66 of their students, as well as providing sponsorship for the event and the drinks reception that followed the ceremony.

Phoenix students were also recognised for their excellence on the day, with 4 of the 6 Best Candidate awards presented on the day going to students who obtained their qualifications through Phoenix Health & Safety.

The awardees were:

  • Joseph Shaughnessy: Best Candidate in the NEBOSH National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety

  • Graeme Hamilton: Best Candidate in the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety

  • Simon Starks: Best Candidate in the NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate

  • Fianna Lynn: Best Candidate in the NEBOSH International Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Professionals

Phoenix staff, including CEO, Nick Higginson, were present at the ceremony to congratulate students and provide them with support and advice for their next steps into their chosen careers.

Nick also presented two awards to students, Best Candidate in the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals Unit 1, and

Best Candidate in the NEBOSH National Diploma for Occupational Health and Safety Management Professionals Unit 2.

Commenting on the ceremony, Nick said: “20 years ago, I was receiving distinctions myself, and now Phoenix has nearly 70 of our students graduating. Our growth over this period has been phenomenal, and the ambition shown by these students and award winners has been a huge part of the Phoenix success story.

“We were privileged to hear from numerous Phoenix students as they shared their remarkable learning journeys with us. Their expressions of gratitude towards Phoenix for their unwavering support were truly heartwarming, and their valuable advice for future students resonated deeply with all of us. These students have been a testament to the hard work and dedication it takes to succeed in this course, and the rewards are there for all to see.”

CEO of NEBOSH, Andy Shenstone, said: “This is a particularly important day in our calendar that gives us the opportunity to celebrate with our learning providers and diploma recipients, who represent over 40 different countries this year.

“The fundamental mission we have at NEBOSH is to save lives and get people home safely from work, but that’s only possible through the work of our learning partners and the achievements of these students. For those that have graduated, the next step is to take these skills back into the workplace and make a difference every single day.”

Graeme Hamilton, Phoenix student and recipient of the Best Candidate award in the NEBOSH Certificate in Fire Safety, said: “I was quite surprised to win the award, but a lot of hard work went into it, as well as support from my wife and son, and the team at Phoenix. I definitely feel more comfortable going back to work, I’ve got the knowledge I need to back up my recommendations when I have to have difficult conversations with management, and get things done to improve the workplace.

“I’d felt a bit apprehensive about the remote learning at first, but Phoenix did a great job creating a real community amongst course mates, and the learning material they provided us with was top class and really helped us. The relationship with other students, some of whom have a lot of experience, really helps you to get through the tougher parts of the course and bounce ideas off each other.”
